Learn Spanish in Costa Rica

Since 1996 WAYRA Spanish School has been offering Spanish classes to foreign students and residents. Our Swiss and Latin American managed school is the oldest and most experienced Spanish school in the province of Guanacaste. The school operates in a pristine environment and offers an ideal setting for people that are interested in learning Spanish by following a full immersion program.

WAYRA receives students from many different backgrounds and from all over the world. Most of our students are from Europe (mostly from Switzerland, Germany, Holland, Sweden, Norway and England) and North America (USA and Canada). But we also have students from Brazil, Australia and Japan.

During our high season from November to March and during July and August an average of 30-40 students are usually enrolled in one of our courses while for the rest of the year we have around 20-30 students per week.

The average age range of our students is approximately 20-35 years old but very often we have older students and even retired people.

WAYRA also offers a children program (6-12 years) and teenager program (13-16 years) during the summer break, but it can also be requested for other dates.

Our multilingual staff (English, German, Spanish and French speaking) will always do the best to accommodate all our client’s requests.

WAYRA Instituto de Español is accredited since 2008 by the Instituto Cervantes and is an official DELE examination center.

Our intensive courses are accepted in different German provinces (Bundesländer) for the “Bildungsurlaub”.

Instituto Cervantes Centro Acreditado

DELE “Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera” stands for "Diplomas for Spanish as a Foreign Language" and are the only standardized certificates for non-native Spanish speakers, issued by the Cervantes Institute. Each year, more and more private companies, government offices, diplomatic agencies, universities and academic institutions require that their candidates submit tangible proof of their Spanish knowledge. The DELE certificates are official qualifications accrediting that you passed the exams and have acquired the level of competence and command of the Spanish language. The DELE certificates are of great international value and an invaluable asset with endless pay offs at academic and professional level.

WAYRA Spanish School will be offering DELE preparation courses, where the candidates will get prepared specifically for the DELE examination. These 4 weeks courses (20 hrs/week) start at the following dates:

  •  March 13th, 2017, April 17th, 2017 and October 30th, 2017

At the end of these courses the student are able to take the DELE exam right at the school. The dates of examination for 2017 are:

  • April 7th, 2017, May 13th, 2017 and November 25th, 2017.

Of course it is also possible to take private classes in order to get a more personalized and specialized instruction.

The Wayra Campus

The Wayra Campus Tamarindo Costa RicaThe Wayra Campus Tamarindo Costa Rica

WAYRA is centrally located in Playa Tamarindo and just 150 meters from the beach and is situated in a beautiful tropical garden. On the premises the students can find three buildings and two small ranchos (open air dry palm huts).

All the 12 classrooms are distributed among the buildings. The classrooms are spacious and comfortable, with large open windows to create a comfortable and appropriate atmosphere to study.
The main building hosts the recepcion of the school, 3 offices, bathrooms and 2 classrooms. The rancho has 5 classrooms and a little convention center on the second floor and the cafeteria with a snack bar on the ground floor. In the cafeteria students relax and enjoy conversations with other students while having some snacks and refreshments. It is also a good place to do homework during school hours or to take part in one of the dance lessons that are practiced after school on the main floor.

The Wayra Campus Tamarindo Costa RicaFree WiFi is avalaible 24/7 on the whole WAYRA campus (including student house WAYRA) as well as at the student houses El Mar and La Carolina. School computers can be used for free during 15 minutes per day in case a student does not bring an own device.

As an additional free service we offer in each room at our student houses a safety box where our students can place their notebook and other valuables.

At WAYRA, the students can enjoy the local wildlife. Iguanas, birds, and many other small animals can be observed while listening to the braking waves of the ocean. Often, the tranquility is only interrupted by the howling of monkeys that takes away the breath of students each time they stop for a visit.

Teaching Methods

We maximize the students learning experience with a thoughtful balance of personal, cultural and academic challenges within a secure and supportive environment. The instructors are skilled in blending conversation with grammar to meet the individual needs of the group members.

In the classroom, we make learning an enjoyable natural process. Teachers encourage debate, conversation and exchange of ideas to promote critical thinking and verbal skills. Games, videos and music are frequently used in the classrooms.

Outdoor activities, such us walks in the nature reserves, visits to different businesses in town to gather information, conversations with people from the community, interviews or excursions to neighboring towns are all used to practice and learn more about the ecology, economy and culture of Costa Rica. Your language ability will grow as your outlook broadens. Every day the students are required to do about one hour of homework.

The Wayra Campus Tamarindo Costa RicaWAYRA has developed its own classroom methodology. Our textbook is designed to accelerate the learning process. Grammar is presented in an organized and logical manner followed by examples. An array of practice exercises and short stories give the students and teachers many conversational opportunities. Additionally, we incorporate materials from various conversational text sources. This results in an eclectic system that enables the student to learn Spanish as quickly as possible, with special attention paid to individual learning styles and modalities.
