Playa Tamarindo is at the heart of "Las Baulas Marine National Park" where giant Leatherback sea Turtles come ashore at night to nest their eggs in te sand.

Las Baulas Marine National Park

Averaging more than 700 pounds and over four feet in length, this giant turtle is also known as Baula and is the largest of the world´s 7 species of sea turtles. Playa Grande to the north and Playa Langosta to the south of Playa Tamarindo make up Las Baulas Marine National Park along with a large offshore area that the turtles use for breeding.

The nesting season at Las Baulas are from October through February and at this time of the year WAYRA arranges excursions to visit the Baulas Museum to learn about the turtles followed by a guide to visit the park to witness the nesting process. These tours are at night and scheduled during high tide.
